It seems to me that one thing that is unique about Joseph Smith is his ability to have a simple and very literal faith, while simultaneously possessing a brilliant mind. When faced with a difficult challenge, such as why there were so many disputing religions, he didn't come to the conclusion himself they must be wrong. He didn't come to the conclusion that their conflicting doctrines were evidence of the non-existence of a God. Instead, he made a very simple and obvious assumption based on James 3:5 -- that he could ask God to help him find the truth. This seems like an obvious choice to members of the LDS faith who have been raised believing that God answers prayers, but it is probably not such an obvious choice to those who simply don't believe in a God who can provide a direct answer to the simple prayer of a young man.

What an incredible lesson for the rest of us. How many of us waste so much of our lives assuming that God doesn't or won't listen to our prayers, and therefore we don't bother to sincerely ask for what we need, believing that He can answer?
